A Massive Carbon Emitting Segment is Construction

November 1, 2022/0 Comments/in News /by ieyc-web-admin

“The built environment generates nearly 50% of annual global CO2 emissions. Of those total emissions, building operations are responsible for 27% annually, while building materials and construction (typically referred to as embodied carbon) are responsible for an additional 20% annually”.

Look around, that very walls surrounding us in our homes are massive contributors to global warming. Steel, Iron, Cement, Bricks, Sand, Gravel extracted from the earth and processed at high temperatures using fossil fuels. Mixing these with huge amounts of water creates a recipe for disaster.

In the enthusiastic process of buying a house, we tend to overlook, or are unaware altogether. The problem becomes apparent, when we understand the cement-making process. Raw materials like clay and limestone come from mining, crushed and mixed with iron ash or ore and fed to cylindrical rotary kilns at about 1500 degrees Celsius temperature. The calcination process in which the mixture splits into carbon dioxide and calcium oxide, giving out cement clinker as a new product. This new grey marbled-sized product is cooled down and mixed with limestone and gypsum, then sent to concrete companies as a ready-mix.

The process of making cement is accountable for half of the CO2 emissions from the construction segment. If we considered cement a country, it would become the third-largest CO2 emitter in the world, surpassing a massive country like China and India. Governments must promote eco-friendly building materials to reduce our carbon footprints on a large scale.

This would take decades to discover and test such a scalable material to be implemented as an alternative in the construction industry.

Should we stop construction?

No, that’s not the solution, we need homes to live in and offices and shops for our businesses. The property sector plays a vital role in a country’s economy. Affecting this will break the economic chain of the country, the labourers will immediately become the first victims, then factories and banks will be badly affected, eventually the economic crisis will support inflation and that will become a burden on the pocket of taxpayers.

Then, What’s the Solution?

Collective efforts of Capturing Carbon would work

An effective solution would be to capture carbon from the atmosphere and keep it locked. The innovative solution is The Carbon Capturing Bags, the most effective method to capture carbon dioxide and keep it locked for centuries, while emitting zero carbon dioxide and making carbon-negative families.
